The best Super Smash Bros. Game?
That’s right.. I said it. I truly believe that “Super Smash Bros. Brawl” is the best Smash Bros. game. Sure, “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate” had every character plus DLC; but Smash Brawl on the other hand has a wide variety of single player modes, such as Classic Mode, which has the same rules as every other Smash Classic Mode, All-Star Mode, which is a gauntlet of the entire Brawl roster, Event Mode, which has specialized challenges with different characters and battle conditions, and last but not least, probably the biggest reason for me even making a Game of the Week about this in the first place…
The Subspace Emissary!
Smash Brawl’s Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary, absolutely blows Ultimate’s story mode out of the water. It follows the Smash Brawl. roster on a journey to defeat Tabuu, a cosmic entity who rules over Subspace, and wants to pull everybody into Subspace in order to further expand his empire. Tabuu uses Chains of Light on Master Hand to turn him into a puppet and trick certain antagonists from other games (Bowser, Ganondorf, and Wario) into following his plans and using an item called “The Dark Cannon” to trap everybody inside of trophies. On this journey, our heroes battle with tons of familiar faces, such as Rayquaza, Petey Piranha, an army of R.O.B. robots, and even Porky Minch. The Subspace Emissary mode truly feels like a celebration of video games, and a trip through memory lane. It features some of the most beautiful cinematics in any video game I’ve ever played, and it tells an incredible story. I could play The Subspace Emissary over and over again and not get bored of it.
The new roster
This is where I’m gonna lose people , but I LOVE the Smash Brawl roster. Super Smash Bros. Brawl was the first game in the series to make character cuts to the Smash roster. Those characters being Dr. Mario, Pichu, Young Link, Mewtwo, and Roy, which, as much as Young Link is my Smash Ultimate main, I see why some of these characters were cut. Most of them were echo fighters, Young Link, Dr. Mario, and Pichu all took their movesets from their counterparts (Link, Mario, and Pikachu). Roy and Mewtwo, however, had their own movesets and were unique enough to keep in my opinion. Smash Brawl added 18 characters, including Pokemon Trainer, Lucas from Mother 3, Snake from Metal Gear Solid, and lastly, a no-brainer, Sonic The Hedgehog. Smash Brawl’s roster understandably does get criticism from the Smash Bros. community for being unbalanced. Meta Knight, for example, was actually banned in some tournaments, purely for having ridiculous Frame Data and just being incredibly OP in general.
All in all, Super Smash Bros. Brawl is a wonderful time, it has plenty of content and I totally recommend that anybody who hasn’t played it yet gives it a try.
